Getting started

  • What is Loopin?
A free way to split costs with friends on a trip, flatmates at home, or the two of you as a couple. Everyone adds what they paid, Loopin keeps the balances, and works out the fewest payments to settle up.
  • Is it really free? Any limits or ads?
Yes, Loopin is free to use right now: no ads and no limit on how many expenses you add.
  • Do my friends need to sign up?
Yes, with an email (or Google), once. It takes about 30 seconds and there’s no password. It means everyone in a group is a real person, notifications reach the right phone, and friends can find each other.
  • How do I sign in without a password?
Three ways: Continue with Google; your email, where we send a 6-digit code; or, once you’ve turned it on in You, your fingerprint or face with one touch.
  • How do I invite friends to Loopin without making a group?
Tap Invite friends to Loopin on Home or on the You page. It opens WhatsApp (or any app on your phone) with a short note and the link. Once they sign up, they show up in Add people as someone already on Loopin, ready for your next group.
  • Can I use it on more than one phone, or install it as an app?
Sign in on any phone and your groups are there. To put Loopin on your home screen, tap App on the Home screen and follow the two steps for your phone (no app store needed).

Your groups and Home

  • Can I give a group a picture, or use my own photo?
Yes. In the group’s settings, under Picture, swipe through drawn pictures and real photos (beach, mountains, Paris, food, a wedding…), or tap Your photo to pick one from your gallery. Your own photo is made small on your phone first and only people in the group can see it. New groups get a drawn picture that suits what they’re for.
  • What are the cards that slide by at the top of Home?
Your overall balance (with Settle up), your month in numbers (your share across groups, how many expenses, what you spent most on), a seasonal idea (like a Diwali card night with The Pot), and a way to bring groups over from another app. Swipe them, tap the dots, or pause them.
  • Why does Home show only four groups?
The four most recently active, so your balances fit on one screen. Tap Show all to see the rest. Closed groups are tucked under Closed groups.

Splitting and settling

  • Are there shortcuts for my thumb?
Yes. Swipe an expense to the left for Edit and Delete (Undo shows straight after). Drag any sheet down to close it. In stories, hold to pause, swipe sideways to jump to the next one, up to open it and down to close. In the installed app, pull down at the top of a screen to refresh. On Android, the taps that matter give a small buzz.
  • How do I split unequally?
When adding an expense, choose Only some (equally between the people you tick) or Custom: exact amounts, percentages, or shares (say 2 : 1 for a bigger room). You can also set a default split for the whole group in its settings.
  • Can I just type an expense?
Yes. Tap Type it in one line and write it the way you’d say it: “Dinner 2400 Ravi paid split with Asha Meera” or “Cab 600 except Dev”. Loopin fills in the form for you to check. Nothing saves until you tap Save, and it all happens on your phone, with no AI.
  • Two people paid, or we got money back?
Pick more than one payer and type what each paid. For a refund or returned item, switch to Money back; it’s shared the same way and the balances move back.
  • We’re abroad. How do currencies and card fees work?
Add the expense in the currency you paid. Loopin converts it at the day’s rate and, for card payments, can add your bank’s foreign-card fee (set it once in the group’s settings), so the person who paid isn’t out of pocket. Cash has no fee. You can type your own rate too.
  • How does Settle up work? Does Loopin move money?
Settle up shows the fewest payments that clear everything, even across all your groups at once. You pay each other however you like, then tap Mark paid. Loopin only records payments; it never holds or moves money and never asks for bank details.
  • Can people pay me with UPI, PayPal or Venmo in one tap?
Yes. Add your UPI ID, or a PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Revolut or Monzo link, on the You page. Anyone in your groups who owes you gets a Pay button in Settle up that opens their payment app with the amount filled in. Only people who owe you see it, and the money goes straight between you.
  • Someone marked a payment to me. What if I didn’t get it?
You’re asked in Settle up (and on your phone): Got it ✓ or Not received. Not received takes it off the balances, with Undo, so nobody is out of pocket on someone’s word. A WhatsApp Remind also carries your UPI ID or pay link and an “I’ve paid” link.
  • Can someone tell me they paid without having Loopin?
Yes. Tap Remind in Settle up and WhatsApp opens with a note, your UPI ID and a link. They open it (no app, no sign-in), pay with UPI, and tap I’ve paid. You’re asked to confirm with Got it ✓. The link only works for what they owe you right now, can’t be used for anything else, and stops working once you’re square or after 30 days.
  • I made a mistake. Can I undo it?
Yes. Edit or delete any expense or payment, and use Undo right after a change. Every change is kept in the group’s history, and everyone in the group is told.

Flats and couples

  • How do rent and bills work for flatmates?
Make a Home group and set each bill to repeat once. Fixed ones (rent, Wi-Fi) are added by Loopin on the day; ones that change (electricity) ask whoever pays to enter the amount; daily ones (like milk) add up by the month. Anyone can skip or undo a month. Nothing is read from your bank, emails or messages: Loopin only adds what you set up.
  • Can a couple split by income instead of 50/50?
Yes. A Couple group can use 50/50, a ratio you choose, or one worked out from your incomes (say 55/45). The incomes are only used on your phone to work out the ratio; they aren’t sent or saved.

Trips and the fun stuff

  • What are the little photos at the top of Home?
Stories from your groups. Each one is a few slides you tap through: photos of where a trip is going with a countdown and the crew, today’s spend while you’re away, last night’s card game with everyone’s result and who pays whom, a group that just got all square, a collection filling up, and a trip from a year ago. Tap the right side for the next slide, swipe down or press Back to close. A green peg means you haven’t seen it yet.
  • What is Wrapped?
A trip told as a few posters: the total you spent together and who paid up front, where the money went, the biggest day, the splurge as a receipt, and everyone’s title. Open it from a group’s Charts, or from Home after a trip ends, and share it as a picture.
  • What is the trip passport?
A little booklet with a stamp for every trip: a city stamp for trips in your home country, a country stamp for trips abroad. Go twice and you get two stamps, but the counts on the first page count each place once. Loopin works out the place from the trip’s name, or from Where to? (when you make a trip, or in its settings). Tick the countries you went to before Loopin under Places I’ve been; they get their own lighter Been there stamps. Open it from the You page and share it to WhatsApp as one picture of your passport lying open: your details and world map on one page, every stamp on the other.
  • Can I see my friends’ passports?
Yes: anyone you’ve shared a group with, even a closed one or if they’ve left. Open You → Friends’ passports, or Our passports inside any group, and tap a name. If their passport is empty, you can nudge them (it shows in their Alerts, at most once a month). People you’ve never shared a group with can’t open yours.
  • Who can see my passport?
People you share a group with, unless you switch it to Only me on your passport page. They see your stamps and countries only: never your money, your groups or your email. Trips that are still happening stay hidden until they’re over, so nobody can tell where you are right now. Nobody is told when you look at a passport.
  • Reactions, titles and the spinning wheel?
Open any expense to react with 😂 🔥 😭 🙄 😍 👏 (tap again to take it back). Once a group has a few expenses, everyone gets a title on Balances (The Banker, Snack Lord, Night Owl…): about habits, never about who paid less. On Add expense, Spin for it lets the wheel decide who pays tonight. During a trip, a short line at night sums up the day.

Card nights and collecting

  • What is The Pot?
For Poker and Teen Patti nights. Make a group and pick The Pot, then start a game. Buy everyone in with one tap (top-ups for just a few), cash out anyone who leaves early and let a new name take the seat, then count what everyone has in one table. Tap Calculate & settle: Loopin works out who won, who lost and the fewest payments to square up.
  • The money doesn’t add up. What now?
Loopin won’t finish the game until every rupee taken has come back. Check the amounts (whoever added a line, or the host, can take it off and add it again). If it really is lost, the host can fix the difference: spread it over everyone who played, or put it on one person, with a reason everyone can see.
  • Do all the players need Loopin?
No. Friends on Loopin see the game and their balance and get a notification when it starts and finishes. Anyone else can just be a name, and they can join with the group’s link later and take over their name.
  • Does Loopin hold the money or run the game?
Neither. It only keeps count, like a notebook at the table: no chips, bets or hands, and it never holds or moves money. You pay each other however you usually do, then mark it paid in Settle up.
  • Where is Collect?
Tap New group and pick Collect: one link to gather money for a gift, a farewell or a booking. People pay you directly and tick their name. Your open collections still show on Home.

Bringing groups over

  • Can I bring my groups over from Splitwise or another app?
Yes. Export the group as a spreadsheet (CSV) from the other app, then tap Bring a group over and pick the file. Splitwise exports and Loopin downloads are read as they are; for anything else, Loopin asks which column is which. Every expense and payment comes across, and the other app keeps its copy. Bring a group over
  • Someone shows “not on Loopin yet”. What does that mean?
They were added by name (for example, brought over from another app) and haven’t signed up yet. Tap their name on People and invite them by email: when they sign up, they take over that name with all its expenses.

Your data and privacy

  • How do you handle my data?
We keep only what the app needs: your email and name, your groups and their expenses, and a small sign-in cookie on your phone. No ads, no tracking, and we don’t sell or share your data. We never ask for bank or card details. Full privacy details
  • Who can see my group?
Only the people in it. Anyone else opening its address sees “Private group”, with no names or amounts. Share the group’s invite link or QR code only with the people who should join.
  • Can I download my data?
Yes. You → Download all my data gives one spreadsheet with every group, your share of each expense, and your account details. Each group’s settings also has Download spreadsheet for just that group.
  • How do I delete a group, or my account?
A group can be deleted from its settings; anyone in it can restore it from Home → Recently deleted for 30 days, and after that it’s erased for good. To remove your email and sign-in, go to You → Delete my email & sign-in. Your groups stay, under the name you used in them.
  • What does fingerprint / face sign-in share with Loopin?
Nothing about your fingerprint or face. Your phone checks it’s you and gives Loopin a key that proves it. You can remove it any time from the You page.
